One of my students recently told me about a $5 to $10 No Limit Hold’em cash hand, which shows exactly how you should play in a marginal position. Although he lost the pot in the end, he played well.

Calling should usually be your default game because you don’t want to take the fourth bet out of your hand, and there are plenty of players who haven’t acted yet. However, when faced with a raise from a loose and flashy player, the triple bet with a strong linear range of value is a strong adjustment because you can expect the initial to be combined with many lower hands, such as 8-8 and A
9.

This is an excellent place to check or bet a small amount. If the champion checks behind, he can easily call the turn bet and can often call the river bet, assuming he thinks his opponent will bet fairly frequently on the turn and river as a bluff.

Checking the back will ensure that the check is not raised and will also allow you to see the face easily, which is exactly what you want when you have a marginal hand.

At this point, the hero has the active nut and must rise. While it is true that he may be called upon by flushes and straights only if his opponent is weak and passive, given the opponent’s loose and scattershot tendencies, it is safe to assume that he will call for a modest increase in size with the upper pair and better made hands.

Even though Hiro lost this hand, I think he played it well.
Note that he wins this bet every time his opponent does not open a good hand. When the opponent does not do this (about 90% of the cases), the champion will win either a small bet when his opponent surrenders or a medium bet when his opponent decides to bluff. This will lead to Hero’s printing rights in the long run.
While the river buff to the hero may seem small, as long as you correctly estimate that your opponent will demand a small buff on the river with many lower hands, it will make money in the long run. If your river has only been raised by the worst hands, then you are not raising the amount enough.
