Oscar Gironella led the field in World Poker Tour Home The main Madrid event is on October 2 in Spain. A No Limit Hold’em tournament with a buy-in of €1,100 saw 396 participants join the fray over three starting flights. This brings the total prize pool to $401,434. The top 51 players in the field scored a minimum cash of at least $2,032.61, and that’s exactly the number of players who returned on Day 2 to advance to the nine-player final table.
Gironella was second in chips when the final day of play began among the last nine, and suffered an early setback when shortstop Jordan Dennis doubled through him on the sixth hand of play. Gironella then fell behind for a while as early eliminations fell before he was able to pull off a double of his own on the fifty-sixth hand of play. He doubled back in the hand of 78 to keep pace with the field.
Gironella recorded just one elimination at the final table, but made it count by saving it in the final hand of the tournament. He faced a 2:1 chip disadvantage against Juan Gonzalo Ares at the start of singles play, but doubled back to take a chip lead by a few hands in the final.
The final hand saw Ares move all-in pre-flop with a K10and Gironella covered him while holding K5. Help came on the board when it was dealt to K6454 To give Gironella a couple and victory. Ares was eliminated in second place with $69,950. It’s an impressive first cash tournament for Ares while playing in his native Spain.
