With a record-setting lottery jackpot win on everyone’s mind, a Las Vegas news station set out to answer the question, “What does it take to score big in Las Vegas?”
After all, despite being home to the gambling capital of the United States, Nevada is one of eight states without lotteries of any kind. If you want to win in Las Vegas, you’ll need to do it another way.
With that in mind, ABC News Reporter Tricia Kane spoke with some of the local experts, including card player A very special Barry and Allen Shulman.
Barry Schulman, who turns 76, is still going strong at the tables and is refreshed to appear at the final table in Tour card poker player The main event in Venice. Just days later, twice World Series of Poker The winner won his 21st career title at an event in Wynn.
The Card Player Magazine The publisher was joined at the final table by his wife, Aline, who finished fifth. Allyn has had plenty of success in poker as well, including a WSOP Bracelet at the 2012 Seniors event. Barry has amassed nearly $6 million in live tournament winnings over the years, and Allyn has added over $1.6 million of her money, making them the experts on how to win in Las Vegas.
The interview also featured casino boss Dustin Boshers, who shows off his day-to-day experience as manager of casino operations at Red Rock in popular TikTok videos. While everyone wants to get a big payout on slot machines, Boshers agreed that players have the best chance of winning if they stick to a game like poker.
“There’s luck, but there’s absolutely no strategy,” Buchers said. “This is how you play hands. It’s reading the other players at the table. That’s all skill.”
Allen Shulman agreed, noting that luck pays off in the long run for everyone.
“There’s always an element of luck, because you don’t know what the turn of the card will be,” Allen explained. “However, the cream is rising to the top. The better players will, over time, make more money than people who gamble or have not studied the game.”
Poker is also a very accessible game. Barry pointed out that anyone, regardless of age or physical abilities, can win at poker.
“I’m still competitive and other people my age are competitive,” he noted. And women can compete with men, and physically challenged people can compete. Assuming you [at] Mental ability B or more, you can become a poker tournament player.
