The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection has issued a “warning” about some betting sites.
“with NFL With college football seasons just around the corner, these illegal websites are now targeting consumers,” the agency claimed.
According to the department, there are only three online gambling operators certified to offer online gambling in Connecticut: DraftKings, FanDuel, and Play Sugarhouse.
“The Department is aware of the existence of numerous illegal outdoor gambling companies that require Connecticut consumers to place bets via their online platforms. These illegal gambling sites are not licensed to accept bets within Connecticut and create a risk to users who may not be aware that these businesses are not complying with state regulations. Created to protect personal information and spent funds.
“If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. These illegal platforms will make promises of better opportunities, higher pay and out-of-this-world sign-up bonuses allegedly endorsed by famous athletes just to entice consumers.” DCP Commissioner Brian Cavirelli.
And while their platforms may seem legitimate, they are illegal and not subject to state regulation and inspection. Consumers put their personal information and money at risk by using these platforms. If you choose to engage in gaming activities, do so responsibly and legally.”
“There are only three legal regulated gaming operators in Connecticut,” said Attorney General William Tong. “Any other site asking for bets is illegal and unregulated, and your funds and personal information may not be protected. If you play, play responsibly. Please report any illegal gambling to the Consumer Protection Department.”
The state has also accused overseas gambling websites of “connecting[ing] direct potential recipients and use high-pressure sales tactics to get them to deposit and place bets.”
To avoid detection, the state alleged, the sites use “third-party sellers to hide payments from the customer’s bank, which is obligated to stop financial transactions involving illegal gambling.”
