Jason Mercier has cashed in ten poker tournaments over the past five years, and has managed to win titles in three of those events. The 36-year-old father of two from Florida has moved back from working full time on the poker tournament circuit in recent years to spend more time with his family. Despite his infrequent appearances on the scene lately, he has proven that he still has what it takes to win the game’s biggest stages.
Mercier’s latest victory saw him defeat a field of 548 entries in 2023 World Series of Poker $1,500 for one Loopball No Limit event Beat a stacked final table to win $151,276 and his sixth gold bracelet.
It was his first win in the series since 2016. In doing so, he became the 21st player in poker history to win six or more bracelets. He is the fourth player to join that prestigious list in 2023, joining Sean Depp, Jeremy Ausmus, and Brian Rast.
Mercier, who is also a European Poker Tour The main event champion, he now has approximately $20.6 million in tournament winnings recorded to his name.
This tournament was scheduled to run over three days inside Paris and Horseshoe Las Vegas, but a fourth day was added so that the final stacked table could be broadcast through poker go, The exclusive home of live coverage from WSOP.
The final day started with four-time Bracelet winner Brad Rubin leading, with nine-time Bracelet winner Eric Seidel second in the chips and Mercier in the middle of the pack.
Seidel, who had finished fourth in the $10K or better Omaha event less than two weeks earlier, John Turner doubled the short chip stack shortly after play began. Seidel then had it all before tying at 10-9-8-5-3. He was against 10-7-6-3-2 for two EPT hero f World Poker Tour Main event winner Michael Watson, who stood Pat first, made the decision. Seidel broke his 10th drop correctly, but drew a queen to miss the bowl and hit the rail at fifth ($31,114). The 63-year-old Poker Hall of Fam member now has over $44.2 million in career earnings.
Turner soon went all-in again, and in rough condition with a 6-5-4 facing a 9-8-7-6-3 pat for Robin. Turner finished with a pair of fives, which meant his ride in the event finished in fourth place ($44,002). twice Venice poker player card tour The main event champion now has over $3.9 million in cash in the ring.
Robin continued to fall into the danger zone, only to bounce back as the three-hander continued. In the end, he slipped below five big blinds and found himself all in and out facing both Mercier (who stood up a pat) and Watson (who pulled one). The Merciers Pat J-6-4-3-2 was good for all the bet, besting the Robin Q-8-7-6-4. Rubin earned $63,505 for his third-place bid. This was his third final in the series. He has increased his career tournament winnings to over $1.5 million.
The heads-up game began with Mercier holding a slight lead over Watson. The two battled it out for about 70 minutes, with some lead changes early on before Mercier took control of what became the last. He won the pot with a 10-7-6-5-4 beating out Watson’s 10-8-4-3-2 to take over 5:1 in chips.
In the final hand, Mercier pushed the button for just over 11 effective big blinds and Watson called all at 10-8-8-6-3. Mercier had a 10-8-4-4-3. Both players discard their paired cards. Watson drew a queen to finish with a Q-10-8-6-3, but Mercier picked five to go 10-8-5-4-3 for the win.
Watson earned $93,495 as runner-up. It was his sixth finish in the bracelet event, including Mercier’s second place finish in the $10,000 buy-in version of that same game in 2016. This last result put him past $21.3 million in recorded earnings.
