The US online gaming industry finished 2023 with record numbers on several fronts. This included some major revenue gains for December.
The industry continues to show growth after celebrating a decade of legal iGaming on a state-by-state basis last year, including online poker.
Pennsylvania
The Keystone State had a huge month in December, according to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), total revenue generated by all forms of gaming was $534.2 million, an increase of 12.5% from December 2022. This was a record month for revenue, surpassing $515.3 million from March.
December also had the highest monthly revenue levels ever for iGaming at $165.1 million compared to $159.5 million in September 2023. Sports betting also reached a record high of $72.6 million compared to $63.7 million in November 2021.
Sports betting totaled $925.6 million, up 22.6% from December 2022. Here are the numbers for all online games:
- Slot machines – $116.9 million, up 4.9%
- Table games – $45.8 million, 13.5%
- Online Poker – $2.4 million, down 8.7%
- Sports betting – $67.2 million
The year overall brought a record $5.7 billion for gaming in Pennsylvania, with online gaming playing a major role after seeing 28% growth through 2022.
New Jersey
The Garden State saw some good increases in gaming in December, according to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE). The state’s Atlantic City casinos brought in $232.4 million in December, a 7.8% increase compared to $215.6 million in December 2022.
The annual numbers showed some growth as well, totaling $2.85 billion compared to $2.79 billion in 2022, an increase of 2.2%. Online gaming for December was $180.3 million, an increase of 19.1% from $151.5 million for the same month in 2022.
Online poker generated revenue of $2.3 million in December, up 4/7% from about $2.2 million last December. For the year, poker saw revenue of $28.9 million, an increase of 5.6% from $27.4 million in 2022.
For the full year, online gaming revenue reached $1.92 billion, registering 15.7% growth compared to $1.66 billion in 2022. For sports betting, total revenue reached $109.4 million in December, up 24.8% from $87.7 million in Year 2022.
Total revenue from all gaming formats was $522.2 million in December, up 14.8% from $454.8 million in 2022. All gaming revenue equals $5.78 billion for 2023, exceeding 2022’s $5.21 billion by 10.9%.
Michigan
The Wolverine State also performed well in December, with online gaming totaling $242.5 million, an increase of 15.9% from November. This includes:
- $181.4 million for iGaming, a record high, surpassing the previous record of $175.3 million set in November.
- $61.1 million in total sports betting, also a record high of over $54.1 million as of November 2021.
- $583 million in total online sports betting handle, also a record 2.5% higher than $568.8 million in November.
In 2023, operators reported $2.3 billion in total iGaming revenue and total sports betting revenue – $1.9 billion from iGaming and $420.4 million from online sports betting. This is an overall jump of 18.3% compared to 2022. Michigan does not break out online poker revenue from other online casino games.
