Luton Town Confirmed on Monday That the club have given permission for Southampton to speak with Nathan Jones about the vacant manager role.
The decision came after their 4-1 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday, which left them 18th in the standings table.
“Southampton FC can confirm that it has parted ways with men’s first team manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. First team coach Richard Kitzbechler has also left the club today.” He said in a statement.
“Everyone involved with the club would like to express their sincere thanks to Ralph for all his efforts, as well as the unwavering commitment he has shown throughout his tenure as coach.”
Hasenhuttl joined Southampton in December 2018 and kept the club from relegation, but this season his side have scored just three wins from their opening 14 games.
The loss to Newcastle marked the club’s fourth consecutive home defeat, with Austrian Hasenhuttl admitting his future at the club was in doubt after the match.
“You know, I’ve made a lot of decisions since I’ve been here. The good thing is that I don’t have to make that decision,” Hasenhuttl said.
When asked if he sees a way out of the difficulties facing Southampton, he said: “No, not at the moment. Because I can’t say we don’t try much to change and play football. I think we’re doing it well. And we can’t say that the effort He wasn’t there, until the last minute we tried and we were putting in a lot of effort on the pitch.
“Nobody can say the team isn’t fighting for it. But you know, we don’t take reward for the effort we put in on the pitch.”
First-team captain Robin Sells will take over on a temporary basis, with a permanent replacement announced in due course.
Southampton faces Sheffield on Wednesday in the third round of the Carabao Cup, before traveling to Liverpool on Saturday.
