A source told ESPN that the deal is not yet complete but significant progress is being made.
Steffen spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough, having lost his place as Ederson’s replacement to Stefan Ortega when the German was signed from Arminia Bielefeld in 2022.
He made 12 first-team appearances for City after arriving in 2020, most recently in the 3-2 defeat to Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final in April 2022 when he fouled out Sadio Mane’s second Liverpool goal.
Stephen is set to leave the club after collecting Premier League winners’ medals in 2020 and 2021. He was also part of the side that lifted the Carabao Cup in 2021, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Tottenham in the final.
He will return to MLS after spending four years with the Columbus Crew between 2016 and 2019.
The 28-year-old, Pennsylvania-born player has made 29 appearances for the USMNT since his debut in 2018, but has been left out of the 2022 World Cup squad in Qatar by coach Gregg Berhalter.
