The United States scored three second-half goals in a 3-0 U-20 World Cup win over Fiji on Tuesday at Bicentario Stadium in San Juan, Argentina, to move closer to a place in the knockout stages of the tournament.
Michael Anthony Varas’ side dominated the game from the whistle – beating Fiji 31-6 over the course of the match – but were unable to find the net until Diego Luna curled a shot past Aidin Mustahib to break the deadlock. Minute 66.

Several close-quarters and some excellent saves by Mestaheb on the Fiji goal kept the score level and the USA kept coming after Luna’s opener, with Cady Coyle and Caleb Wiley adding goals late in the second half to seal the win.
The win was the United States’ second at the U-20 World Cup – after an impressive win over Ecuador to start the tournament – and all but guarantees that the team will advance from Group B with one match remaining against Slovakia, who lost 2-1 to Ecuador on Monday, May 26.
The top two teams from each group and the four best third-placed teams in the 24-team tournament will advance to the playoffs. If the USA wins the tie or better against Slovakia, they will advance to the knockout rounds as group winners.
