WREXHAM, Wales – Watch Wrexham’s Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhinney alongside ‘Ant Man’ superstar Paul Rudd as the team won promotion from the National League to the English Football League with a thrilling 3-1 victory at Boreham Wood on Saturday.
Wrexham, who were bought by Reynolds and McElhinney from a supporters-backed trust in 2021, have sealed promotion 15 years to the day since a 2-0 defeat at Hereford prompted them to be relegated from the Premier League.
But the Red Dragons endured a restless 90 minutes against Boreham Wood, who took the lead at the turf just 44 seconds into the game with a goal from striker Lee Ndlovu.
Needing a win to avoid having to beat Torquay United on the final day of the season to guarantee promotion, Wrexham equalized on 15 minutes when midfielder Elliott Lee scored with a wide headed header.
But it wasn’t until striker Paul Mullen scored his 46th goal of the season with a stunning strike in the 53rd minute that Wrexham took charge of the game and cruised to a decisive victory.
Mullen, free transfer from Cambridge United in 2021, collected the ball near the touchline, but raced past his defender and curled a shot behind goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore from 20 yards to put Wrexham ahead.
The striker, said to be the highest-paid player in the National League, made the game – and promotion – safe for Wrexham when he scored a solo goal, his 47th of the season, in 71 minutes to make it 3-1.
Wrexham’s victory confirmed the club as National League champions and saw it replace Rochdale in the Second Division. Rochdale were relegated to the First Division on Saturday after 102 years in the Premier League.
