The Australian government has launched a new nationwide self-exclusion registry called BetStop. It allows people to ban themselves from gambling on licensed interactive betting platforms for a period of not more than three months and up to a lifetime. This covers both telephone and online operators.
Any player who is part of the registry will not be able to create an account or place any bets. Licensees are not able to send any type of marketing material to these persons and must also promote BetStop via their platforms.
Part of the National Consumer Protection Framework for online betting
The launch of BetStop comes as part of the National Consumer Protection Framework for online betting, which has been on the horizon for some time. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) will organize BetStop and launch a public awareness campaign to let people know about the new service.
Speaking about the launch this week, Communications Minister Michelle Rowland MP said: “BetStop will change lives for the better, giving Australians most at risk from gambling the hit they need.”
Another new official gambling procedure being implemented in Australia will ensure operators’ identity is verified when a new account is created.
