Content creator MrBeast is the latest celebrity to speak out about scammers using deep artificial intelligence (AI) technology to imitate him. Fake competition scammers and fraudulent gambling companies have begun using images of the star to trick people into downloading apps or parting with their money.
iPhone giveaway ad includes a deepfake
MrBeast, whose real name is James Donaldson, took to X on Tuesday to raise awareness of the issue, sharing an iPhone giveaway ad featuring a fake photo of himself. He urged social media platforms to take action to combat the “serious problem”:
Earlier this month, another ad for MrBeast was shared on social media. The ad, which was for a fraudulent gambling app, used deepfake technology from MrBeast and BBC reports to convince the viewer that the star had created the app. The announcement explained that “the British have already received about 40 million pounds sterling.” “Mr. Best says anyone can do it.”
User X moekordofani shared a video of the ad in question:
In addition to MrBeast, Hollywood actor Tom Hanks has also complained about ads containing imitations of artificial intelligence. A company promoting its dental plan used a fake photo of the star to endorse the product. Likewise, broadcast journalist Gayle King warned people “not to be fooled” by an ad that used her video to promote a product she did not endorse.
