A former employee of home appliance company Hisense who embezzled more than A$3.3 million (US$2.2 million) over eight years to feed her gambling addiction has pleaded guilty to eight counts of obtaining a financial advantage by deception.
Submitting false supportive complaints to the company’s financial manager
Working as a customer service manager for the Chinese company in Victoria, Australia, Aphrodite Myron manipulated the customer complaints claims process to transfer the money to herself. The 58-year-old filed false corroborative complaints with the company’s CFO and transferred the cash to 35 different bank accounts controlled by her and her family.
In the District Court of Victoria, Judge Nola Karabanagiotidis noted the hardworking nature of the woman while also describing her behavior as a massive breach of trust accrued with a large sum. Myron will face sentencing at a later date after pleading guilty.
Myron’s attorney argued that gambling provided a form of escape from a difficult relationship with her husband and the responsibility of caring for her mother and children.
