BetMGM is in trouble in Massachusetts for accepting thousands of invalid bets on college football games. The Investigations and Enforcement Bureau (IEB) revealed its findings during a Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) meeting on Thursday.
The operator took more than 15,000 prop bets on college athletes, with total bets reaching more than $200,000. While some states allow prop bets on college athletes, these types of bets are prohibited in Massachusetts.
BetMGM does not self-report violations
A court hearing will be held to discuss the legal violation due to the number of bets and the total amount of money, according to MGC Commissioner Eileen O’Brien. The IEB first noticed the violations, as BetMGM did not self-report the violations. MGC President Cathy Goodstein noted that she wanted to resolve the issue quickly “in order to protect the student-athletes.”
Two other compliance issues came up during Thursday’s meeting. Retail sports betting company MGM Springfield improperly accepted a small bet on an in-state college team that was not in a national championship game. Fanatics Betting and Gaming also committed a similar violation.
