One lawmaker said the chance North Carolina lawmakers will expand gambling laws this session is high. Senate Leader Phil Berger — one of North Carolina’s most powerful lawmakers — believes the odds are “better than 50-50” for the new gambling legislation to reach the governor’s office this summer.
Still considering allowing casinos outside of tribal lands
The General Assembly remains active as politicians continue to finalize the state government’s two-year budget. Chamber leaders are also still considering allowing casinos outside of tribal lands, as well as possible regulation of video gambling machines.
Just last month, the state enacted a law legalizing sports betting statewide, with the sector launching at some point in 2024. Tribal casinos have been able to offer retail sports betting in North Carolina and on-site online betting for some time, but now they can accept Bets from people across the entire state.
Richard Snead, chief of the Eastern Division of the Cherokee Indians, welcomed the change in a statement this week. He said it puts North Carolina “on par” with neighboring states that have already enacted such rules.
