Pheonix Rising could make history if it obtained one of the three sports betting licenses available in the state of Arizona.
Like the proverbial mythical bird after which it is named, the Phoenix Rising franchise of the United Soccer League (USL) has risen from the ashes of a 2021 betting license rejection. The team has now announced that it will “absolutely” apply for one of three newly available sports betting licenses in the state of Arizona. .
The first non-major US sports entity to offer sports betting
If Phoenix Rising is one of the lucky three on September 12th — the deadline set by the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) for awarding licenses — the franchise will make history as the first non-major sports entity in the United States to offer sports betting.
The application process for one tribal sports betting license and two commercial sports betting licenses will run from August 1-15. The Arizona Rising Rose Law Group’s legal representative stated that ADG would then announce eligible bids within two weeks. After the regulatory body names the three successful applicants in September, franchisees and their sportsbooks will have 180 days to release them.
The team – which has played for England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips and Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba – also faces competition from Fanatics Sportsbook for the two commercial sports betting licenses available.
