Vermont is the 29th US state to launch online sportsbooks. Three operators were launched at midnight on Thursday, allowing punters to get in on the action before the start of the AFL playoffs on Saturday.
While Vermont is the second most populous state in the country, officials estimate the activity could generate $7 million in tax revenue in its first year. This number could rise to $18 million annually as the market matures. People must be at least 18 years old to place bets and users cannot add funds to their accounts using a credit card.
He selected Fanatics, FanDuel and DraftKings as recipients of the licenses
Vermont Gov. Phil Scott signed sports betting legislation into law in June, and the Department of Liquor and Lottery selected Fanatics, FanDuel and DraftKings as license recipients in December. ESPN Bet and BetMGM were unsuccessful bidders despite the regulator being authorized to issue up to six licences.
The next state that appears poised to launch online sports betting is North Carolina, with it expected to happen in time for the popular college basketball tournament March Madness.
