US Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV) ignited a fireworks under 13 major US sports leagues and the NCAA by sending them all letters asking them to share their sports betting policies.
In the face of recent gambling-related controversies, Congresswoman Titus has taken the moral high ground, saying that the essence of being a sports fan is knowing “the games you watch are fair.”
Titus took to Twitter to reiterate her message to American sports bodies and backed it up with a KSNV News clip:
Titus, whose representative jurisdiction includes the Las Vegas strip, wants sports bodies to respond to its demands by July 15. It wants the 14 bodies to provide clearly defined sports betting and gambling policies for athletes and staff, as well as answer questions about gambling education, monitoring and investigation programmes.
Stop suspicious bets before they are placed
Titus said sportsbooks and “innovative integrity watch firms” can alert federations and gambling regulators of suspicious betting activity, with the goal of stopping suspicious bets before they can be placed.
“When players are suspended, and coaches are fired, that means the system works,” Titus added, no doubt referring to Detroit Lions’ Jameson Williams, who was hit by the NFL with a 6-game fine just last April for the wide receiver. To reveal last month that he was “not aware” that the league had a sports betting policy.
