Al Hilal SC, Al Hilal SC, broke the world record for “the most consecutive wins for a first division team” with 28 consecutive victories.
Victory over Al-Ittihad 2-0 on Tuesday
He led the team coached by former Benfica and Flamengo coach Jorge Jesus through a record-breaking streak with Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Al-Ittihad in the AFC Champions League.
Al Hilal’s winning streak dates back to September 21, where they earned the most points in each match since a 1-1 draw with Damac. The franchise’s purple patch also put them 12 points ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr at the top of the Saudi Professional League.
Al Hilal’s history-making run has been largely fueled by the elite footballers it has poached from major European leagues in Saudi Arabia’s attempt to become a global football market.
One of Al Hilal’s best signings – and perhaps in the league – is former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. The Serbian, who raised many eyebrows when he insisted on a move away from Fulham, scored 26 of his side’s 81 goals during the winning run.
He has been joined by other stars in the squad, including former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves and Brazilian striker Neymar, who despite costing £77.6 million ($99.2 million) plus add-ons, has been out since October with a serious knee injury.
Even without the mercurial Brazilian, Al Hilal succeeded in achieving the 27 consecutive victories achieved by the Welsh team New Saints in 2016.
